RESUMO

Mosquito surveillance is an essential component of mosquito control and mosquito traps are a universally employed tool to monitor adult populations. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the new modular Biogents BG-Pro mosquito trap (BGP) and compare its performance to 4 widely used traps for adult mosquitoes: the BG-Sentinel (BGS), the BG Mosquitaire (BGM), the CDC miniature light trap (CDC), and the encephalitis vector survey trap (EVS). One semi-field and 9 field Latin square trials were performed in 7 countries. Results showed that the collection performance of the BGP was equivalent to or exceeded that of the BGS, BGM, CDC, and EVS traps in head-to-head comparisons. The BGP uses 35% less power than the CDC and 75% less than the BGS and BGM. This lower power consumption allows it to run at 5 V for 2 days using a small lightweight 10,000-mAh rechargeable power bank. The BG-Pro is an excellent alternative for the surveillance of mosquito species that are usually monitored with BG-Sentinel, CDC, or EVS traps.

RESUMO

Several studies have suggested that athletes with disabilities experience more difficulties having access to oral health care than the population in general. The aim of this study was to estimate the impact of socio-demographic/socio-economic factors, oral hygiene habits and clinical oral health conditions on the OHRQoL Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (assessed with the Oral Health Impact Profile 14 OHIP-14) on a sample of athletes with heterogeneous types of disabilities. Altogether, 105 athletes with disabilities were evaluated. Cross-sectional data was collected including interviews to obtain socio-demographic/socio-economic data, the OHIP-14 and clinical oral examinations parameters. The outcome variable was the OHIP-14 severity score. The explanatory variables were sex, age, monthly household income, level of schooling, frequency of toothbrushing and flossing, gingival bleeding, periodontal disease, trauma in incisors, prosthesis wearing and needs, number of sound teeth, DFMT (decayed, filled and missing teeth) index and its isolate components. Mann-Whitney, Kruskall-Wallis and Spearman tests used to compare OHIP-14 severity scores associated with the explanatory variables. The mean OHIP-14 severity score for the sample was 9.32 (SD 8.99) and the most affected domain was Physical Pain (mean 2.63; SD 1.97), followed by Psychological Discomfort (mean 1.81; SD 2.02). Significant differences in mean OHIP-14 scores were found for periodontal disease, need for complete dentures, number of sound teeth, DFMT index and its components. These results suggest that these clinical parameters can be related to impaired OHRQoL for this population.

RESUMO

Host plant species have very specific interconnection with galling species. Here, we estimate the potential distribution of the host plant species Andira humilis Mart. ex Benth. (Fabaceae) to consequently locate the potential distribution ranges of its galling species Lopesia andirae Garcia, Lima, Calado, and Guimarães (2017) based on ecological requirements. The ecological niche model was built using Maxent v.3.4.1k, an algorithm that estimates species’ distributions. We found suitable habitats for L. andirae encompassing areas of the Cerrado, Caatinga and Atlantic Forest. Annual mean temperature (70.2%) and temperature annual range (13.9%) were the most critical factors shaping A. humilis and necessarily L. andirae. Our results can guide taxonomists and ecologists regarding the delineation of sampling areas as well as conservation strategies for this ecological interaction.

RESUMO

Introduction: The odontogenic keratocyst was recently reclassified in 2017 by the World Health Organization as a cystic lesion of epithelial development derived from the enamel organ or the dental lamina. It shows common characteristics to cysts such as slow and continuous growth; however, it arouses attention for its high aggressiveness and recurrence rate. Objective: To show marsupialization followed by enucleation as a definitive treatment of odontogenic keratocysts. Clinical case: A 63-year-oldwoman with odontogenic keratocyst on the left side of the mandible, treated by the marsupialization technique followed by enucleation. Conclusions: Although there are various treatment options, the dental surgeon may prefer the conservative method in the approach of the odontogenic keratocyst, because it presents the lowest rate of morbidity and relapse within the standards presented in the literature(AU)

The article discusses methodological aspects to guide the audiovisual analysis in qualitative research offering a simplified model to help the researcher to make a combined use of verbal and visual analysis of videotaped interviews with ATLAS.ti support. As an example it was taken the immigrants reports about their experiences in Brazil trying to identify relationships between positive and negative emotional facial expressions of immigrants and the content of their testimony. The results indicate that emotional expressions fulfill different functions such as emphasizing, contradicting and replacing the verbal reports of immigrants. In some cases we identify the suppression of immigrant emotional manifestations, even in the most negative statements. The steps for analysis in ATLAS.ti are presented with illustrations.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the addition of L-glutamine and zinc on nutrient digestibility and nitrogen balance in the period 9-15 days old. Were used 140 chicks, distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial 2 (1 and 2% glutamine) x 3 (0.0, 90.0 and 120.0 mg zinc / kg diet) and control treatment, with five replications, with four birds each. No effect of the combination of L-glutamine and zinc on the coefficient of digestibility of dry matter. At levels 1 and 2% L-glutamine, zinc, influenced increasingly and quadratic linear form, respectively, ether extract digestibility, and all treatments showed higher values when compared to the control. The treatment with 2% L-glutamine combined with 120 mg of zinc/kg feed showed higher nitrogen excretion, lower coefficient of digestibility of protein and lower use efficiency of nitrogen. The diets with the addition of 1 and 2% L-glutamine associated with all levels of zinc further provide increased ether extract digestibility. The treatment with the combination of 1% L-glutamine with 90 and 120mg of zinc/kg and 2% L-glutamine, without the addition of zinc to provide greater retention of nitrogen

RESUMO

Distinct Trypanosoma cruzi genotypes have been considered relevant for patient management and therapeutic response of Chagas disease. However, typing strategies for genotype-specific serodiagnosis of Chagas disease are still unavailable and requires standardization for practical application. In this study, an innovative TcI/TcVI/TcII Chagas Flow ATE-IgG2a technique was developed with applicability for universal and genotype-specific diagnosis of T. cruzi infection. For this purpose, the reactivity of serum samples (percentage of positive fluorescent parasites-PPFP) obtained from mice chronically infected with TcI/Colombiana, TcVI/CL or TcII/Y strain as well as non-infected controls were determined using amastigote-AMA, trypomastigote-TRYPO and epimastigote-EPI in parallel batches of TcI, TcVI and TcII target antigens. Data demonstrated that "α-TcII-TRYPO/1:500, cut-off/PPFP = 20%" presented an excellent performance for universal diagnosis of T. cruzi infection (AUC = 1.0, Se and Sp = 100%). The combined set of attributes "α-TcI-TRYPO/1:4,000, cut-off/PPFP = 50%", "α-TcII-AMA/1:1,000, cut-off/PPFP = 40%" and "α-TcVI-EPI/1:1,000, cut-off/PPFP = 45%" showed good performance to segregate infections with TcI/Colombiana, TcVI/CL or TcII/Y strain. Overall, hosts infected with TcI/Colombiana and TcII/Y strains displayed opposite patterns of reactivity with "α-TcI TRYPO" and "α-TcII AMA". Hosts infected with TcVI/CL strain showed a typical interweaved distribution pattern. The method presented a good performance for genotype-specific diagnosis, with global accuracy of 69% when the population/prototype scenario include TcI, TcVI and TcII infections and 94% when comprise only TcI and TcII infections. This study also proposes a receiver operating reactivity panel, providing a feasible tool to classify serum samples from hosts infected with distinct T. cruzi genotypes, supporting the potential of this method for universal and genotype-specific diagnosis of T. cruzi infection.

(AU)

This study analyzing immigrants' perception on their experiences in Brazil based on 11 different reports, gathered from two round tables and the personal interviews obtained during a Seminar. A thematic analysis was used with the support of a software of qualitative data analysis ATLAS.ti. The thematic categories of analyses were the negative and positive Brazilian emotions towards immigrants; behavioral manifestations of friendliness and hostility, and negative and positive experiences in Brazil. The results show the presence of intergroup positive emotions and positive behaviors, but also Brazilian negative behaviors and emotions towards immigrants. This ambiguity call into question the shared belief about Brazil as a hospitable country. (AU)
